4 Simple Ways to Achieve Your New Year Goals

| by Caitlin Plummer, under Inspiration

With the New Year, comes new year's resolutions. Promises to eat healthier, get more exercise, live with less stress - the list goes on.

Even though we may have the best intentions when we set these goals by the time February rolls around more often than not we have fallen back into old habits.

How can we keep our resolutions throughout the New Year? Here are four simple ways to give you the best chance at changing your habits and reaching your new year goals.

  1. Keep it simple

Keep your goals simple and don’t try to change too many habits at the same time. For example: If your goal is to get more exercise and you’re usually not an early riser in the morning it’s not advised that you sign up to 6 am boot camp classes 7 days a week.  Trying to adjust your body to extreme amounts of exercise and less sleep is asking too much and you are setting yourself up for burn-out. Instead try a lunch-break workout or take a long walk in the evening three days a week.

  1. Write it down

You are 42 percent more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down. Writing your goals down not only forces you to get clear on what, exactly, it is that you want to accomplish, but doing so plays a part in motivating you to complete the tasks necessary for your success. Likewise, telling a friend or significant other of your goal is a great way to keep yourself accountable.

  1. Track your progress

Your progress to reach your goal may not be linear, so it’s important to track your progress (and your shortcomings) in order to be able to see the bigger picture.

  1. Understand that changing is hard to do

Much of our day is made up of subconscious decision making - this is largely determined by our habits. Habits can take more than 21 days to change (for better or worse) so it does take time and effort to make positive changes to your lifestyle routine.

New Year's resolutions are hard to keep. But by staying positive, keeping it simple, and finding a friend to help you out, you can reach your goals for 2020!
